GRANTS FAQS
(FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

1. Can an exception be made for certain applicants regarding the eligibility criteria to the Pfizer Fellowship and Scholars Grants?
2. Is U.S. citizenship required in order to apply for a Fellowship or Scholars Grant?
3. What may the Pfizer Fellowship funds be used for?
4. How may the Pfizer Scholars Grant be used?
5. Will I receive a copy of the board’s evaluation of my grant proposal?

1. Can an exception be made for certain applicants regarding the eligibility criteria to the Pfizer Fellowship and Scholars Grants?
The eligibility requirements – academic, scientific, etc. – are designed and maintained by the Academic Advisory Board specific to the field in which the grant is made. These criteria have been carefully designed to attract appropriate candidates at a certain level in their professional development. In keeping with the purpose and intention of the Pfizer grants, applicants must meet all the criteria in order to be considered for the grant. Submissions outside these parameters will not be considered.

2. Is U.S. citizenship required in order to apply for a Fellowship or Scholars Grant?
An applicant for a Pfizer Fellowship and Scholars Grant must be a U.S. citzen or foreign national with U.S permanent resident status. If you are not a U.S. citizen, a copy of your green card must be provided with your application. Visiting scientists on 'J' visas are NOT eligible. An applicant for the AFAR/Pfizer Research Grants in Aging must also be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3. What may the Pfizer Fellowship funds be used for?
The Pfizer Fellowship is intended to be the grantee’s primary salary support, equivalent to the usual and customary salaries of individuals in comparable positions at the institution. The grant may also be used to cover incidental laboratory supplies and expenses and travel expenses to scientific meetings. Fellowship funds may not be used for indirect costs and fringe benefits with the exception of health insurance premiums.

4. How may the Pfizer Scholars Grant be used?
In the interest of the Scholar’s faculty development, funds may be used to cover salary as well as other direct expenses incurred during the Scholar’s research project. This includes the salary of one technical associate; the purchase of relevant laboratory equipment; direct expenses necessary for proper conduct of research; and travel expenses to scientific meetings. Pfizer cannot provide the university with allowance for indirect costs.

5. Will I receive a copy of the board’s evaluation of my grant proposal?
No. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide Fellowship and Scholars applicants – either grant recipients or those not receiving grants – with comments by the Academic Advisory Board. Our objective is to keep our administrative costs as low as possible, preserving the bulk of our budget for actual grants.
